PBS Volunteer News Edition 25 - Wrap Up
2012: An eye popping
year!
Mara here from PBS HQ! Well PBS, the Melbourne community
music radio station never ceases to amaze me.
24 hours x 7 days x 52 weeks per year = how long PBS broadcast in 2012. According to my quick calculation that’s 8736 hours broadcast. PBS is not only powered by electricity. It’s powered by people and those people are volunteers. It’s awesome that there’s a community out there who support volunteer efforts – our listeners-members, donors, sponsors, musicians, artists and more. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the awesome splendour of volunteer contributions in 2012.

Of course the PBS memberships couldn’t be processed without
the SCRITS system devised by PBS volunteer Steve
Passiouras [membership database]. Thanks to Steve for his ongoing support with
making a user friendly system, and making system upgrades to suit PBS’ needs.
Hear Steve on his program Fret Net!
And special thanks to Mamma Vittoria’s Pasta Classica,

The Music Library
The heart of the music radio station is of course it’s music
library, and there’s been so many people who’ve helped catalogue, distribute

And a special thanks to Naish P for organising, obtaining
the First Software Solutions [library database] that PBS has used all year to
catalogue the CDs.
Office
In this office, there’s administrative volunteers who help
on a broad array of things like grant applications, organising meetings,
cleaning up databases and so much more. Thanks to David B [Station Manager
assistance], Marcello S [Membership], Anne K [Accounts] and Sue Mc [Membership].
And a big thanks to the other volunteers that make things happen: the
maintenance volunteers: Chris P [Building] Denis [electrical], Brad Stark [Ad
hoc] and Jeff H [maintenance], who’ve worked on a number of different projects
consistently. And also thanks to Ryan H for lifting and shifting.
PBS Website
The PBS website is created and maintained by two brilliant
volunteers Garry Havrillay, Jurgen Schaub. If you’ve seen the PBS website www.pbsfm.org.au you can see this is a
massive job. I say! What a terrific job they’ve done.
Production Volunteers
So I get a lot of enquiries about people wishing to
volunteer in the PBS Production Department [they handle the sound related enquiries,
working with bands, and at outside broadcasts, archiving live sessions, setting
up recording programs for announcers and more. Unfortunately, we can’t
accommodate all the requests, but we can accommodate some. Thanks to Joe F,
Eugene H, Barbarella S, Michelle B, Luwanna R, Amy C and Luis for your help
Work Experience
I love the work experience kids that come into PBS. There’s
no coffee making, but every work experience person has helped out with the day
to day running of the station and gained an insight into what goes on behind
the scenes at a community radio station.
Thanks to Sammy G, Josh B, Alex K, Ediz S, Luke Z, Damien T, Lucy D, Louka EP,
Tim R and Madeleine M for all your help. Maybe we’ll see you in the future?!
Board
If you check out the PBS policies and procedures,
you might
discover that PBS has a Board. They’re responsible for a number of
things. Volunteers contribute at all different levels, from sealing
envelopes to making important leadership decisions. The Board of course
determine
strategic direction, policy development, financial sustainability,
regulatory
and legal compliance of PBS. They also appoint the General Manager.
Thanks to Garry
Havrillay, John Carver, Mike Sewell, Ross Giles, Simon Minahan, Jurgen
Schuab
and Clare Stuchbery. Good Governance! There’s so many people to thank at
PBS.
Doesn’t it make your head spin?

Retiring announcers
Mike Glover and PBS friends |
It’s always sad to see announcers leave PBS, but the reality
is that that some must say farewell. Special thanks to all our retiring
announcers who contributed to the PBS grid in 2012. They were: Erica Dunn
[Mixing Up the Medicine], Gabriele Urban [Trans Europa Express], Luke Demetriou
[Everybody Moves], Garry Seven [Get On Up],
Kayde Madden [Doctor’s Advice], Tom Sedunary [Jazzbeat], Steve Austen [Break
The Chain], Sean Melrose [Brass Monkey], Kat Chishkovsky [Lockdown], Yoni
Nathanson [Top Ranking Sound] and Michael Glover [Border Crossings] which was awarded the Mick Geyer Award by the PBS Board.
New Announcers
On the upside, when a space is vacated, a new one opens up,
so what a privilege it is to be able to welcome new announcers to the PBS grid.
In 2012, new announcers were Grace K [Bangin’ Radio], Jennifer Kingwell [Glitter and Doom], Kate
Reynolds [Zero Sum], Perry Holt [In The Quiet], Adrian Meade [Contact], Matt
McFetridge [Jungle Fever], Moses Iten [Space is The Place], Magnus Beckett
[Break The Chain], Chelsea Wilson [Jazz Got Soul], Ian Parsons [The Sound
Barrier] and James Parker [Far Side Virtual].
