PBS Volunteer News 10, 2017

Easey Street in Springtime,  September 2017

Howdy folks!  It's September! It's Spring and the year at PBS has zoomed thanks to all the amazing volunteers who've helped us do what we do, and make us what we are.

Here's an important update from PBS HQ📡📡
PBS proudly supports marriage equality. We would like to recognise and thank our LGBTIQ+ listeners and our community members who perform, produce, program, publicise and contribute to community radio and Melbourne’s vibrant and diverse music communities. Our love and support goes out to our LGBTIQ+ families and communities at this time.

There's been many expressions of interest to volunteer at PBS and I think I know why..... It's great to help out, give back, meet new people, feel connected with your community, gain experience and effectively share time and skills at this Melbourne institution. PBS stands for Progressive Broadcasting Services and is a radio station 📻📻 with an aim to nurture, inspire and champion Melbourne's diverse music community.

You can read about PBS announcer Richie 1250's own personal experience as a volunteer.

Richie 1250 caught on camera by Zo Damage

Notes About Volunteering with Richie 1250

At 12 years in, my relationship with PBS is the longest in my life not counting those with my mother and The Astor Cinema. Even in those cases, I go visit my mother and The Astor once every few months (a little more often with The Astor depending what's on), but I'm here at PBS at least once a week doing my show, whether I just split up with my girlfriend of 8 and a half years three hours ago or not. It's definitely been a boon in keeping my mental health on track. Knowing that people are expecting me to appear on the radio at 5 on Fridays and looking forward to hearing me play records for them means I can't just slowly disappear into the ether like I sometimes feel I might. Feeling like I'm contributing something joyous to the community and being a part of a tradition that I value, I tell ya, it's a good feeling.

The programming committee puts together the PBS grid which is updated 3 times a year

I also volunteered for about 6 years as a member of the programming committee, where we evaluate proposed and existing shows and have conversations that determine what new shows will come onto the grid. It's been really fulfilling to do my part in making sure PBS can be the best station it can be overall, and seeing shows you've had a hand in getting onto the air go from an idea and a demo to become great regular parts of the PBS landscape (Adriana's 'Opalakia'  show comes to mind) is as close as I'm likely to get to having a child and cheering them at their sports game or whatever.

Richie also puts on Melbourne's only slow dance party

I'm also really grateful for some of the friends I've made through volunteering at PBS. Justin Thomas has been my regular front desk phone answering guy for about 9 years now, and the relationship we have and the conversations we have at the front desk while I eat my lunch before the show are quite unlike any other in my life. Me and PBS office manager Mara Williams started at PBS around the same time too and getting to see her every time I come into the office always gives me a buzz. Her enthusiasm for live music and community radio, her humility and kindness and support of newcomers and general sense of community spirit represent to me a human distillation of why this radio station holds such a special place in my heart and my life.

Record collector and creator Richie also shows us how to open a shrink wrapped LP without destroying the plastic wrap

I wanna thank all you folks who volunteer your time at PBS and I hope you're getting some good life juice out of it too.

PBS Policies and Procedures
It is important for all volunteers and staff to be familiar with this. See the P&P here and http://pbs.org.au/policy. The Policies and Procedures Handbook ensures that PBS remains in safe compliance with the Codes of Practice and other relevant legislation. It also positions PBS volunteers, announcers and staff to operate with a shared, clear understanding of how things work at PBS. Please read it carefully. And if you’re inspired, why not consider becoming a PBS shareholder? The AGM is held 29th November 2017.

PBS acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we are located

and we pay our respects to them, their culture, and their Elders past and present
