Thanks in 2019

December 21 is the big date! This weekend, PBS turns 40 and there’s no better time to reflect on the year that’s been. In our last year of the decade some really big things happened.

Our home since 2001: 47 Easey Street went under the hammer on the day of our Radio Festival wrap party. With a 20 year lease and inner city gentrification at unprecedented levels, PBS knew this day would come. So we’ve been planning this for some time, and in February we were lucky to become recipient a grant for the impending move to The Collingwood Arts precinct.

Moving homes is expensive business especially since we’re a radio station. We couldn’t do without the help of our community. The last time PBS moved from St Kilda to Collingwood, it was said to cost over 1 million dollars even with the help of so many volunteers. So in November 2019 a new fundraiser for works and moving (on top of the operational fundraisers: Performer Drive, Radio Festival) was launched and called the ‘Make it Home' appeal.

If you’ve ever used www.pbsfm.org.au you might have noticed we got a new website and it came just in time! PBS can be heard on FM, DAB+ and streaming via our website. The  Windows app was maintained by the wonderful Carl Belle but our Iphone app became obsolete. A new development in 2019: you can find PBS on I heart radio app.

Another long running project that became a real thing in 2019 was the 40th anniversary book. Thanks to Michelle Gearon and Nichola Scurry for their tireless efforts collating and gathering mementos, permissions and so much more. It took hundreds of hours of community consultation, follow up and a dizzying degree of detail. The book – is a wonderful souvenir of the people and times of PBSFM. Launched in November at The Hub during Melbourne Music Week, it coincided with our induction into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame.

The recognition reflects the participation of everyone who’s ever been involved at the station!

And if you were part of the story in 2019, we'd like to say thanks to you!  You may see names repeat on this list. That's because some people volunteer in more than one way...

Here they are:

Chair of the Board Jurgen Schaub presenting Pierre Baroni with the Mick Geyer Award
Mick Geyer Award
The Mick Geyer Award is given in recognition of an individual’s outstanding service to PBS and, through that, to the broader music community.  Mick Geyer was a PBS broadcaster and Editor of the station magazine Waves. His work embodied the spirit of a progressive broadcast. At the PBS Christmas Party, Pierre Baroni was the recipient of the Mick Geyer Award #9, presented by Board Chair Jurgen Schaub. Jurgen said that Pierre helped “establish PBS as the foremost broadcaster of their particular kind of music anywhere in the southern hemisphere, and the ripple effect of that out to the pubs and clubs of Melbourne is undeniable” Upon presentation of the award, Pierre was speechless! Congratulations Pierre Baroni for the recognition of your broadcasting efforts at PBS.
