PBS VOLUNTEER NEWS EDITION 1 2012

We’re back!
The first week kicked off with a real high at PBS.  J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. came into the Easey Street Studios and spoke with Garageland’s Ruby Soho.

And there was a real life Japanese Funk band that came and visited us too.

But PBS didn’t really close, as our trusty PBS volunteer announcers continued to broadcast throughout the Xmas and New Year period 24/7.

And a big thanks to all those who did, sharing their music, knowledge and time.

Have you ever wanted to be a PBS announcer? Read down to find out the first step to becoming a broadcaster at PBS if you’ve never done radio before. But first up: here’s some volunteer roles coming up or available now:

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Ever heard of Richie 1250? He’s the lead singer in Richie 1250 & The Brides of Christ, is a party DJ at party places including The Old Bar, Yah Yahs, The Gem & many more, a Writer and Editor and is one of PBS’ most committed volunteers.

“I got into PBS through listening to The Formula on Saturday nights. I'm not sure how I got onto it, it was just part of being a suburban hip-hop kid in the 90's, you'd gather in someone’s garage and drink longnecks of Melbourne Bitter and listen to The Formula and call up and get Stewbacka to give a shout out to ‘all the boys in Benny's garage in Clayton’ or whatever. Eventually as I got older I got into all different kindsa music and started listening to lots of other shows. I tried to sign up as a volunteer several times throughout the early 2000's but my emails never got returned. I used to make these Christmas mix CD's for my all my friends and fam every year (still do), and one Chistmas my cousin said ‘you've got all these records, you've got a cool voice, you should do a show on PBS’.

So in 2005 I used this course credit I had from completing a Work For The Dole program to do the PBS announcer course. I submitted my show demo, did some fill-ins for a couple months and then got put in my Friday arvo spot I've been doing ever since.

But out of these last six and a bit years I've only been employed full-time for about 2, so I've had plenty of time to help out doing other stuff around the station. I've done front desk reception, CD library re-stacking, working the door or setting up or hosting events, read sponsorship carts, compiled CD's, written articles for the magazine, picked up dinner for the phone room volunteers during radio festival, eaten dinner as a phone room volunteer, and various other jobs that needed doing!

Lately I've been editing the Easey magazine and helping carry prams at rock-a-bye-baby and doing the odd last minute front desk spot. Even when there's nothing for me to do I find myself just coming in and hanging around the office, distracting the gang. I like hanging out with gang... I listen to lots of shows on Peebs but the ones I tune into every week without fail are Rampage and Soul Groove '66”...

Richie’s story goes to show that the more you put in, the more you get back. Announcer course, volunteering, employment, if you’re interested in getting involved with PBS this year, do it by emailing mara[at]pbsfm[dot]org[dot]au

And you can listen to Richie 1250 present his program Stone Love on Fridays from 5-7pm.

FINAL THOUGHT

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
