Amy Chapman, PBS music and interviews Volunteer
How did you initially get involved at PBS?
I started volunteering at PBS a year ago – I had recently moved back home to Melbourne after living in Germany and was looking to get involved again in the local music scene. A friend suggested I try volunteering at PBS and since I had been a long time listener, it seemed like a good idea to me, too. A year later and I’m still there every week!
What music have you been listening to recently?
Lately I’ve been listening to the latest records from Flying Lotus, Four Tet, Dirty Three and Antibalas, though there were a lot of amazing releases that came out last year so I could probably go on for a while..
Who are your all time musical favourites?
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will always be a favourite, as well as Bjork, Tom Waits, Miles Davis; I’ll always be going back to their records. I grew up listening to a lot of orchestral music/composers too so am a bit nerdy when it comes to that world.

What do you do at PBS?
I assist Chelsea in the Music Library. I help out with the large volume of interview requests that come through each week, as well as processing the new music that is sent through to the station and maintaining the loans and returns system. Most of all though I help with allocating music to our programs, which is my favourite thing to do there as it exposes me to a lot of music I probably wouldn’t have otherwise discovered.

Tell us about your music related endeavours
I have a degree in Audio Engineering and Sound Production, and I studied Music Performance for a while, too. I lived for a couple of years in Berlin where I edited and mixed music for local acts and played regular gigs both solo and in bands. I was also a senior contributor and later sub-editor for a local gig guide/magazine there and I’ve continued with some freelance music writing here in Melbourne, too. I lend a hand with Music Victoria and AIR when I can and write a lot of my own music.

Would you like to be a broadcaster? If so, what kind of show would you pitch?
I took the announcer course last year with Jenny O’Keefe, who made the course so fun and interesting – I went in just curious to learn how it all works and came out wanting my own show! The problem is just that – not knowing what to pitch! I haven’t settled on an idea yet.

What’s been the most rewarding thing about volunteering at PBS?
Without a doubt, the friendships I have formed there. Everyone at PBS is so genuine and welcoming, and I have loved getting to know everyone over the past year. I always look forward to the days I am at PBS so I can catch up with my friends and discover some pretty wonderful and interesting music all at once.

What advice do you have for prospective volunteers?
Do it! It’s a great opportunity if you are curious as to how the station operates; discover great new music and form friendships with like-minded people who are likely to be just as music-nerdy as you are.

The Policies and Procedures Handbook ensures that PBS remains in safe compliance with the Codes of Practice and other relevant legislation. It also positions PBS volunteers, announcers and staff to operate with a shared, clear understanding of how things work at PBS. Please read it carefully. And if you’re inspired, why not consider becoming a PBS shareholder?
