PBS Volunteer News - 2 - 2015

ABOUT A VOLUNTEER....
We first met Sandra Di Francesco, an Archaeologist who assisted PBS with its own archives. She's become a writer, and will commence writing volunteer profiles for the PBS volunteer news. First things first, I thought it would be good for you to know a little more about the woman who'll write about volunteers. Here's a little bit about Sandra, by Sandra!

Spotlight on a PBS volunteer: Sandra Di Francesco
Volunteers are the heart and soul of PBS radio station. Without them the station wouldn’t be able to exist as it does.  Daily the station relies on help from its huge intake of volunteers like the show presenters, reception staff, music library staff, hosts of events etc etc.

There are so many volunteer roles on offer that almost everyone gets a chance to be involved.  On top of this PBS has created a very nurturing and welcoming environment for its volunteers. It’s really like an extended family. Many volunteers have been here for years so they have shared the highs and lows together.

All volunteers carry within them a human story. This is expressed in their motivations and desires for coming here. There are diverse reasons for getting involved. Some come here for their love of music, some to give back to the community, others to become presenters etc. Each volunteer is unique forming a bigger part of the whole.  Having said this many do share similar motivations.

I myself initially got involved in PBS back in 2011 as a way to build up my journalism portfolio.  I wanted to get volunteer experience in the field of media and radio is one such field. From day one Mara and all the staff welcomed me on board with open arms and were very encouraging. I felt so excited and humbled to be part of the team. If I could have survived without my paid part time employment I would have come into PBS five days of the week.  I’m so happy though I was still able to come in when I could. Through volunteering I developed a real passion for the music. I started listening to the numerous PBS shows and still continue to this day.

Thank you PBS and to all you readers out there get involved and become a volunteer. Your life will change for the better!

Check out my column next month to find out more about some of the fantastic PBS volunteers.... Now here's the rest of the volunteer news....

A team of about 30 volunteers and staff headed by former PBS volunteer, now staffer Cameron Durnsford worked together to put this event together and a crack team of fantastic photographers put their hand up to take pictures exclusively for PBS during Drive Live. Fine Print Policies and Procedures

It is important for all volunteers and staff to be familiar with this. See the policies and procedures here and http://pbs.org.au/policy. The Policies and Procedures Handbook ensures that PBS remains in safe compliance with the Codes of Practice and other relevant legislation. It also positions PBS volunteers, announcers and staff to operate with a shared, clear understanding of how things work at PBS. Please read it carefully. And if you’re inspired, why not consider becoming a PBS shareholder?
