PBS Volunteer News- 8 - 2015

As you probably know, PBS announcers are volunteers. Each week they come in with a well researched program & present their picks, sharing it with listeners in Melbourne and beyond. The PBS grid changes 3 times a year, to create new opportunities for aspirant announcers and capture emerging musical cultures. Inevitably as some new PBS announcers commence a program, others will finish theirs....
Mick Williams at the annual Spanish Fiesta on Johnston Street Fitzroy

Mick Williams started off doing The Latin Connection fill-ins on Fitzroy Street St Kilda when Sarah Tartakover was doing the show. Then in 2006 he presented his dance music program Latin Flava on Saturday nights. After a number of years on air, that program was merged with The Latin Connection with Leandro, but he's been at PBS over 10 years. Throughout his time with PBS, Mick has been a highly committed volunteer. Each week he presented a festive Latin dance party on Friday mornings, as well as inviting many members of the Latin Dance community in to talk about their happenings. Plugged in and switched on to the lovers of Salsa, Tango, Bachata, Zouk, Vallenato, Merengue and beyond! You can guarantee that Mick will be around all the clubs DJing, so catch Mick out and about... Try these on for size Copacobana Latin 247  Dance 101  and he also has a Facebook Page if you'd like to stay in touch

James Parker

James Parker came to PBS to present the cutting edge to listeners five years ago on his program Farside Virtual. Presenting an experimental program feat genres and sounds many had never heard of. Sounds such as vaporwave, hauntology, critical beats and so much more. At a music station committed to playing under-represented music James took PBS listeners to the edge and that's no mean feat! James continues his highly respected family and  professional endeavours.

Alessia Pegoli
Alessia Pegoli first came to PBS as a volunteer in the phone room, at the same time she wrote a blog on interesting people and their creative pursuits.  After Radio Festival she volunteered to assist Pierre Baroni of Soulgroove66 taking calls, and she became one of his buddies. Before we knew it she presented the "The Prosecco Hour". The idea came from digging deep in her family collection, and developed from there - mid century Italian (and to  further extent European) tunes to start the sophisticated Saturday night party. Alessia finished up on the Insomnia shift, yet returned during to present on the Saturday night slot where her popularity jumped! As things happen, Alessia had the opportunity to travel the world- so why not take it?! Like all PBS announcers, she put her heart and soul into producing her program and her parting wish to PBS listeners was to "keep singing, dancing and drinking Prosecco!"

Thank you to these wonderful announcers for serving PBS and sharing their collections, and their musical and cultural passions with listeners. We hope you won't be strangers!

There'll be some other movements: DJ Mr Smith changes his alias to Prince Jimmy and his show name to Cocoa Butter Thursday 1pm – 3pm. Miss Goldie's Boss Action moves into Saturday 7pm to 8pm. Paddy Harrisson moves to Friday mornings with Ports of Paradise.  The new players include Shanghai Rocker Lenz presenting Into the Void, and long time PBS volunteer Madi Wright with Be Suburban. Fine Print Policies and Procedures

It is important for all volunteers and staff to be familiar with this. See the policies and procedures here and http://pbs.org.au/policy. The Policies and Procedures Handbook ensures that PBS remains in safe compliance with the Codes of Practice and other relevant legislation. It also positions PBS volunteers, announcers and staff to operate with a shared, clear understanding of how things work at PBS. Please read it carefully. And if you’re inspired, why not consider becoming a PBS shareholder?
