About a Volunteer
There are over 400 volunteers who help out at PBS annually. If you were wondering what type of person volunteers at PBS, the short answer is: all sorts. But usually they're music-loving, they love what the station plays and what it stands for. Some people volunteer to develop their skills and knowledge, and others wish to share theirs. Everyone who comes to PBS has a different story. Meet volunteer, Nichola Scurry who has been working on PBS' 40 year anniversary book.

Nichola Scurry
40th Anniversary book coordinator, fill- in announcer, radio festival volunteer

A bit about yourself:
My name is Nichola (Nic) Scurry. I was born in England, grew up in Melbourne and aspire to live in Barcelona (at least during the Melbourne winters). I love post-punk music, community radio (of course), tapas and warm weather. In 2017 I published my first novel, With the Music, a coming of age story set in 1980s and 90s Melbourne.

How do you fill your time outside of PBS?
I've just started out as a freelance grant writer helping people in the arts get funding for their dream projects. I'm also working on my second novel, a young adult dystopian fiction.

What drew you through the doors of PBS?
In 2008 I did an announcers course run through the CAE that used the PBS studios. I really liked the atmosphere at PBS and how generous they were letting a "random" practice in their studios.

What is your favourite program at PBS?
That's so tough, but I would have to say Connections. Chris and Sasha were some of the first PBS people I met and I really love the concept of a musical family tree.

When did you start volunteering?
I think I did a Radio Festival phone room gig around 2008, but became a regular volunteer in 2013.

What do you do at PBS/what you have done?
For the past two years I've been working on the 40th anniversary book. This was a fantastic project and I loved meeting so many amazing people who've been involved with PBS from 1976 until today and seeing all the old pictures. I've also been a volunteer in the music library and in the phone room during Radio Festival. I've filled in for a variety of shows, mostly Homebrew during the Christmas break.

What kept you at PBS?
The people. Everyone is so generous with their time and music knowledge, plus they are welcoming and easy to talk to. Awesome peeps all round! I love feeling connected through a shared passion for music, no matter what the genre.

What does PBS mean to you?
Does it sound corny to say a place where dreams come true? As a kid in the 80s I would write stories and tape songs off the radio and record my own back-announcing to go with the songs. I wouldn't have believed that one day I'd be helping with a book and being an announcer at PBS.

The 'P' in PBS stands for progressive. How do you envision that PBS can live up to that?
By continuing to do what it does - supporting diverse music that isn't being supported elsewhere. I hope that as new music forms arise and new groups of people start making music, that PBS will continue to support them.

If you could do a show on PBS, what would it be called and what would you like to present?
I once put in a proposal for a post-punk show focusing on music from 1978-1982, but that's a little narrow so I am thinking of ways to broaden that. If I could tie in music from that era with music being released now, that could be cool. I'd called the show "Nic's Dreaming" in reference to my favourite book about music, Jon Savage's "England's Dreaming".

PBS Policies and Procedures
It is important for all volunteers and staff to be familiar with this. See the P&P at http://pbs.org.au/policy.  The Policies and Procedures Handbook ensures that PBS remains in safe compliance with the Codes of Practice and other relevant legislation. It also positions PBS volunteers, announcers and staff to operate with a shared, clear understanding of how things work at PBS. Please read it carefully. And if you’re inspired, why not consider becoming a PBS shareholder? Check out https://www.pbsfm.org.au/about  The AGM will be held on Wednesday, November 27.
