PBS VOLUNTEER NEWS 1, 2020

A listener rang in the other day to tell us, "With everything that's going on right now, it's good to know there's PBS..."

Ordinarily, we might say happy New Year, but it's hard to celebrate following recent events- which might have left you asking what can I do? We've seen people take action, and communities across Australia come together through crisis.  The music community has responded with benefit gigs, compilations and other types of donations. Through all this, it's been nothing short of amazing to see people come together to help others in need. Volunteers have really been our heroes, working tirelessly and some saving lives:  A reminder that there’s all different kinds of volunteering out there in the world, and volunteers really do make a difference.

At PBS, volunteering supports the station’s activities to do what we do: broadcast 24/7 to nurture, inspire and champion Melbourne's diverse music community. If you’d like to find out more about upcoming volunteer vacancies, please read on....

ABOUT A VOLUNTEER…
KIX AFRO TURN UP
Since 2017 Kix has been presenting AFRO TURN UP, the best in contemporary African music from the early 90s to present day.

A bit about yourself:
I was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe and then moved to the US for university and work. Six years ago I left Boston for Melbourne, motivated by my misconception of a balmier climate. Despite the letdown in the weather, Melbourne is where I began to cultivate my creative side. I started a blog which led to me becoming a contributor to an online magazine, which gave me the confidence to start a podcast with my sister, which then sparked my interest in becoming a radio presenter, and here we are now!

What drew you through the doors of PBS?
The first thing that drew me to PBS was the quality of the programs that I’d heard on the station. When I decided that I wanted to explore becoming an announcer, it was really important to me that I learned from people who do it well. Secondly, I love the diversity of genres presented on PBS—you’ll be hard-pressed to find another station in Melbourne that can match PBS in this regard; this signaled to me that PBS is serious about being a platform where underrepresented music is heard. It was especially encouraging to see Stani’s show, Flight 1067 to Africa, on the grid.

What kept you at PBS?
Everyone I’ve met at PBS is passionate about music so it’s great to be part of a community of music lovers, even though we may specialize in different genres. I am always amazed that it is through the power of passionate volunteers and generous members and donors, that PBS airs live 24/7.

What does PBS mean to you?
PBS is one of the places where I can freely express myself creatively. The studio is a place where I find joy and where it feels like what I do matters. It's a platform that affords me the privilege to serve the African-Australian community, particularly those who are young and young-at-heart. And it's an opportunity for me to invite others to learn more about Africa, her people, cultures and stories through a thoughtfully curated music experience.

The 'P' in PBS stands for progressive. How do you envision that PBS can live up to that?
I think that in many ways PBS already demonstrates progressiveness; if you just look at the programming grid you will see a great variety in the kinds of music aired, and the Announcer Training Course for women and gender diverse people is another great example. Having said that, as Australia's demographics show that the country continues to become even more multicultural, I think that there is an opportunity to further champion progressiveness by engaging people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, not only through the types of music represented on the station but also who presents the music.

Afro Turn Up Airs every alternate Friday 2am - 6am AEST on PBS 106.7FM, streaming at pbsfm.org.au on via I heart radio app

PBS Policies and Procedures
It is important for all volunteers and staff to be familiar with this. See the P&P at http://pbs.org.au/policy.  The Policies and Procedures Handbook ensures that PBS remains in safe compliance with the Codes of Practice and other relevant legislation. It also positions PBS volunteers, announcers and staff to operate with a shared, clear understanding of how things work at PBS. Please read it carefully. And if you’re inspired, why not consider becoming a PBS shareholder? Check out https://www.pbsfm.org.au/about  For more information email gm@pbsfm.org.au
