PBS is seeking a Program Manager and here is the Position Description

The role of Program Manager (PM) offers a significant opportunity to be proactive in shaping the sound of a key pillar of Melbourne’s unique music community.

This is a senior position at PBS and is the main point of contact for all on-air and aspirant announcers. The PM acts as a conduit between the station administration and announcers, ensuring that all station activities are effectively communicated to announcers and vice versa, whilst ensuring that station Policies and Procedures are adhered to.

Working closely with the Programming Planning Group (PPG), the PM will plan and manage PBS’ regular program reviews. The role also actively scouts for new broadcast talent, provides broadcasting mentoring, and oversees announcer training and development. The ability to provide honest and constructive feedback is essential. Experience in training would be advantageous.

The PM manages staff in the Music Department (music library and interviews), which coordinates PBS’ Studio 5 Live and liaises with music labels, artists, promoters, publicists and artists. This aspect of the role is crucial in maintaining communication with PBS announcers.

In addition, the PM works in conjunction with the Marketing and Events department to contribute to the effective promotion PBS’ programming to its audience. The role is also responsible for contributing to the station’s quality on-air sound and style in association with the Production department.

Duties and Responsibilities:
This role includes, but is not restricted to, the following duties and responsibilities.  Tasks may be added from time to time to meet organisational needs.

  •  Act as key contact person for announcers
  • Manage all day-to-day programming activities
  • Oversee clear and accurate program information within PBS and to our audience
  • Work in conjunction with the PPG to identify strategic direction in programming
  • Manage the regular program review process
  •  Ongoing management of the appraisal of all programs
  • Actively source and administer aspirant announcer applications
  • Provide particular attention to the breakfast program, The Breakfast Spread
  • Prepare written reports on programming for the General Manager, Board and the PPG
  •  Identify training and development requirements for announcers and coordinate the preparation and delivery of that training
  • Monitor the performance of announcers in regard to compliance with the various rules and guidelines laid out in the PBS Policies and Procedures
  • Contribute to reviews of PBS Policies and Procedures
  •  Ensure the programming of PBS meets the station’s charter of playing under-represented music
  •  Through strategic programming ensure that the station remains sustainable, while always looking for program innovation and future music trends
  •  Work to achieve the principles of the Annual Programming Statement as set by the Board
  • Put programming design into practice by exhibiting strong leadership skills. This will be measured by the PM’s ability to achieve their desired changes though effective communication and negotiation
  • Use structured procedures to ensure all relevant parties understand the decision making processes
  • Ensure relationships with all parties, both internal and external, are maintained professionally for the benefit of PBS
  • Periodical cleaning  duties according to a cleaning roster  

Essential Selection criteria:
1.      Effective people management skills, with a flair for diplomacy, effective communication and negotiation skills
2.      Significant radio experience and the ability to guide others in their development
3.      Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work positively within a team
4.      Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing music radio programming
5.      A broad music palette
6.      Relevant music industry experience and knowledge
7.      A strong understanding of Community Broadcasting and compliance

Hours of Work:
This role is based around a 35 hour week, which is to be completed during the office hours from 10am-6pm, Monday – Friday; some additional hours may also be required on occasion.
