End of Year Wrap Up

In 2011, PBS was all about people!
This year [just like any other year], there were loads of volunteers helping PBS run.  You might know that volunteering is an enshrined principle of community radio and plays a critical part in the delivery of what PBS does. This includes the Board, program planning, on-air broadcasting, reception, events and much, much more. PBS would like to say a massive thanks to our volunteers for their or your contribution in 2012. When we say we couldn’t do it without you, we really mean it!

The first weeks of 2011 were occupied by planning for the year ahead. February was occupied by Live Music Week, a week where we salute live music in Melbourne by hosting live music on air.  Every time PBS holds an event or has some kind of activity, volunteers are always involved. That’s because PBS is a volunteering organisation. During Live Music Week, our announcers focus on playing live music, musicians volunteer their time to play live in studio, and during Studio 5 live during drive, many other volunteers helped the event run.

Thanks to Anton, Ellen F, Ellen, P Ben W , Emma M, Jane B, Justin T, Logan , Lou R, Madi W, Mansa C, Mori J, Rajiv P, Sally D, Sam B, Sarah B, Simon O, Jon O, John H, Bill B, Chris P, Tom D, Thomas D for all your help over the week. Thanks also to Ken Eavel, Nik B and the production volunteers who helped out at the OB featuring Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes, The Breadmakers and Harmony.

In the same month PBS had a Membership Drive. Volunteers and members are important to PBS, each contributing in different ways. Where volunteers contribute their minds and labour, members contribute through financial support.  The band member to win the February band drive was Judge Pino and The Ruling Motions.
Richie 1250 helps the band drive winners load the car with their prizes

Also in February, PBS hosted the first Rock A Bye Baby[RABB] for 2011 at the Fitzroy Town Hall. Madre Monte played and Mori, Oscar, Tach, Will & Caleb helped the crowd.
2 months later the next RABB was held. Hillbilly sensations The Rechords played whilst Sally, Tach, Leyla, Adam, Tony and Tom helped out.

By March the first of announcer courses commenced for 2011.  Announcer courses are small classes [8] held over 5 weeks, and are the first step to becoming a volunteer broadcaster. Over the course of 2011, 7 courses were held. An exclusive 48 PBS people were trained in broadcasting at PBS.

In March, one of our volunteer announcers, Michael Mulholland of Junkyard [Thurs 7-8] had an exclusive interview with Henry Rollins.  Here is the pictorial evidence:

In April, PBS officially went digital. Louise Please and Richie 1250 were the official PBS DJ's, and their point of diffference? They were spinnin' vinyl.

By May it was Radio Festival! Radio Festival! Radio Festival?
Database[SCRITS] that PBS announcer Steve Passiouras created made things quicker and easier this year!
Radio Fest is the 2 week on air fundraiser. The aim of the fundraiser is to pay for the activity of the station for a year; that’s 24/7 broadcast.  Radio Festival relies on volunteers to take membership phone calls for the two week on air campaign, but then the behind the scenes volunteer work stretches to 1.5 months after. You see, we send out all the kits ourselves, and that takes the help of many. Here are some of the names who helped out at Radio Festival 2011.
Amar was just one of the 135 + volunteers who helped out behind the scenes during Radio Festival 2011

Mid year and it's Community Cup time! The Rockdogs blitzed the Megahertz, but there's always 2012.  Thank you to all those who played from PBS and thanks to those PBS volunteers who helped out Reclink on the day.

By July, the Radio Festival was all wrapped up, another announcer course was on the go. The Radio Festival prize winner was announced and the next major volunteer project for PBS was the Music Library. PBS has existed since 1979, so that the music library is impressive but there was a problem. It needed to be catalogued.  Library cataloguing was kick started by Naish a Mudhoney fan and volunteer who organised a software package donated by First, and the training. Once the wheels were in motion volunteer’s commenced training, then the trainees and staff taught the new volunteers. This project continues...

Did you know that PBS has a Board?

No not that kind of board! The kind of board that determines strategic direction, policy development, financial sustainability, regulatory and legal compliance of PBS. They also appoint the General Manager. November heralds The PBS AGM. In 2011,  4 seats were up for re-election in November. None were contested. Did you know that Board members are also volunteers?  Which reminds me:
Thank you to Claire S, Garry H, John C, Jurgen S, Mike S, Ross G and Simon M who are the PBS Board, volunteers leading the way.

In the same month, PBS was awarded the Community Engagement Award by the Community Broadcast Association of Australia for Rock A Bye Baby. What was most interesting about receiving this award – is the event is not broadcast. Instead it’s an event held within the community that PBS puts on and promotes. Kudos to the event organisers for your hard work. Double thanks for all the volunteers who assisted at this event. By December Rock A Bye Baby featured the talents of- Judge Pino and the Ruling Motions – thanks to those who volunteered at this rewarding event: Richie, Hugo, Mick, Monica.

Also behind the scenes on a day to day basis, there’s a whole bunch of people who help run the office. Thanks to the many receptionists who’ve taken the calls, memberships, and referred people, helping them on their way through PBS.

How do you say thanks to so many people for making PBS what it is?
Well they say when it comes to volunteer work, the reward is in the work; making connections, feeling part of something, and making a meaningful contribution.  But here's some other ways to say thanks:
